Where the golden ratio comes from
It's the ratio where the larger part relates to the smaller one the same way the whole relates to the larger part — mathematically: (a+b)/a = a/b = φ ≈ 1.618.
How to use this in practice
Give one dimension of an element (e.g. a card's width), and the calculator suggests the other (height) in that proportion — you can shrink it (divide by φ) or enlarge it (multiply by φ).
A healthy distance
It's worth treating the golden ratio as one of many useful design heuristics, not mathematical proof that a given layout will look good — the final judgment still belongs to the eye and the context.
